Background of the Study
Lactose intolerance has become an increasingly researched condition as genetic factors and dietary habits interplay to affect human health. In Asaba, recent studies have indicated a high prevalence of lactose intolerance, making it imperative to investigate the genetic markers that predispose individuals to this condition. Researchers have suggested that specific gene variants influence lactase persistence and non-persistence, thereby affecting dairy digestion (Adeyemi, 2023). The investigation aims to integrate genetic analysis with environmental and cultural factors peculiar to Oshimili South Local Government Area. The study further considers how historical migration and dietary evolution have influenced gene distribution among the indigenous population. By using modern genetic screening techniques and comparing results with international datasets, the study seeks to identify potential genetic markers that are consistent with global trends yet unique to the local populace (Okeke, 2024). In addition, the research explores whether local dietary customs have altered gene expression over generations. A continuous examination of gene–environment interactions provides a broader context for understanding the biological underpinnings of lactose intolerance, offering insights into potential management strategies for affected individuals (Chukwu, 2025). This multifaceted approach underscores the importance of genetic research in addressing community-specific health challenges while contributing to broader epidemiological knowledge.

Statement of the Problem
Despite global research on lactose intolerance, there remains a dearth of studies focusing on the genetic markers among the Asaba population. The lack of localized genetic data hinders accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment for lactose intolerance in Oshimili South Local Government Area. Current health strategies are based on generalized findings, which may not account for the unique genetic makeup of the community (Bello, 2023). This study aims to bridge this gap by pinpointing specific genetic variants prevalent in the region, thus enabling improved understanding and management of the condition within this distinct population (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify the predominant genetic markers associated with lactose intolerance in Asaba.

  2. To compare local genetic profiles with global data on lactase persistence.

  3. To evaluate the influence of cultural dietary practices on gene expression.

Research Questions:

  1. What genetic markers are most commonly associated with lactose intolerance in this population?

  2. How do local genetic profiles compare with international lactase persistence data?

  3. What is the impact of dietary habits on gene expression related to lactose intolerance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant association between specific gene variants and lactose intolerance in Asaba residents.

  2. The genetic profile of the local population differs markedly from global averages.

  3. Cultural dietary practices significantly influence the expression of lactose intolerance-related genes.

Significance of the Study
This study will elucidate key genetic factors affecting lactose intolerance, providing crucial insights for public health interventions. The findings can inform tailored dietary recommendations and improve diagnostic accuracy in the region, while contributing to the global repository of genetic research on lactase persistence (Obi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating genetic markers and their association with lactose intolerance among residents of Asaba in Oshimili South Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Genetic Markers: Specific sequences in the DNA used to identify genetic predispositions.

  • Lactose Intolerance: A digestive disorder where the body is unable to digest lactose.

  • Lactase Persistence: The continued activity of the lactase enzyme into adulthood.
